Beijing is the capital of China, located in the north east of the country. It is China’s second largest city, after Shanghai. Beijing is home to most of China’s largest state owned companies and to the world’s four biggest financial institutions. Its international airport is the second busiest in the world, and its subway system is the busiest and second longest in the world, after Shanghai.
Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and will host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, which will make it the first city in the world to host both these events.
Beijing has seven Unesco World Heritage Sites: the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, and parts of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal.
Worth a visit are the Tiananmen Square, the National Stadium, the medieval city centre, the Lama Temple, Zhongshan Park, Beihai Park, Chaoyang Park, Ritan Park, the Fragrant Hills, the Botanical Garden, the Palace museum, the National museum, the Military museum, the Capital museum, the China Aviation museum, and the Contemporary Art Scene.
