From the period of the Etruscans, the Romans and the Renaissance man, to the extraordinary paintings and sculpture, frescoes and architectural masterpieces, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of of art in the world. Students of all ages come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet exquisite wine and cuisine. Hikers enjoy the mountain paths; cyclists, the rolling hills; and, summer vacationers, the glorious sun, clear, blue seas and wonderful islands. There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, beginning with Florence on to to Siena and then to Pisa. The rollcall of citta' d'arte (cities of art) is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all very striking. The more you get to know the region, the more you will find how truly extraordinary Tuscany is.Tuscany is a workshop for artistic expression, a place of synthesis and rebirth on a universal level. The first-hand experience of art in this region begins with the cave dwellings of Cetona, the steel-statues of Lunigiana, the remnants of ancient civilisations on the island of Elba, the Etruscan necropolises with tangible signs of its Roman past, the countless testimonies of the Middle Ages, the flowering of the Gothic, the explosion of the Renaissance, the opulence of the Baroque, the Macchiaioli, the flowery art nouveau style, Liberty, which has finally reached the trends of contemporary art, etc... etc... the list is endless...
If you are interested in the center of Italy, you will find Umbria, located between Tuscany and Le Marche, to be especially appealing. Umbria's capital, Perugia, owes its origins to the Etruscans. This is a hilltop town that does not have a lot of available space and in the confined spaces are found some of the best in Italian life and culture, as well as history. Umbria has been baptized "the green heart of Italy" because of the abundance of oak evergreens. You will also find some very appealing wooded hills that lie between the Tiber Valley. There is also the Lake Trasimeno, which is the biggest expanse of water in Umbria and the place where Hannibal fought and vanquished the Romans way back in 217 B.C.There is a great deal of excellent wine and food in this region. The truffles of Val Nerina and the fresh or smoked trout are prime examples of its culinary delights. Olive groves are plentiful with the Umbrian olive oil enjoying a good reputation as having low acidity and wonderful flavour. Also worth trying out is the Montefalco red wine and Grechetto white wine.

Milan is perhaps the most cosmopolitan city in Italy. People from all corners of the globe converge here to work or study, or to plain just play. It boasts of many diverse attractions that suit people with different tastes. For those interested in modern art and architecture, this city has the best finds. As for culture? To begin with, this is the home of the famous opera house La Scala where all the who's who of the opera world has at one time or another performed. There is also no better place to pick up on fashion trends and clothing than in Milan which is considered to be the fashion capital of Europe. This is where all the best designers meet and greet and have their major fashion shows for each season. You should also take the time to visit the Quadrilatero where you will find the best boutiques from Italy and the world's top fashion labels. Enter the district Brera in the heart of Milan and you will even experience high fashion up-close and personal? You might also try out the indigenous fare from the local eateries because a visit to Milan would certainly lack in flavour if you didn't. While you're at it, try Negroni, an aperitif that you can sample along with snacks and other worthwhile dishes like Risotto alla Milanese and Cassouella.Without a doubt, a visit to Milan will convince you that you have come to an enchanting and exciting city where you can view a great number of places of historical importance. Although it is art embodied in Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece "The Last Supper" which has the most significance.

Venice is one of the most visited cities in the world and a favourite among lovers, especially honeymooners, because of the romance it conjures. Although famous for its canals, gondolas and its gondoliers singing "O Sole Mio" at the top of their lungs, Venice has an abundance of history and art treasures hidden in its many palaces and museums. The "Venice Film Festival" is also reputed in the movie world as not only prestigious but one of the most respected award-giving bodies in the business. The home of the world-famous glassblowers on the island of Murano is also worth a trip. The vast lagoon around Venice is witness to the delicate balance between man and nature and the eternal struggle of man against the sea and the debilitating effects of saltwater. The fact that Venice seems to be slowly sinking worries not only the Venetians but environmentalists and art heritage preservationists as well. To only imagine that this ancient city will someday be eaten-up by the tide is too painful to bear, therefore, it is important not only to visit the city now but to support causes that would help Venice stop this disaster from ever happening.

St. Nicholas' city, the regional headquarters, extends half way into the Puglia Adriatic Coast, on the edge of the fertile land of Bari. An ancient Roman site, it was always an important trading town; first the Normans and then the Swabians developed the city, with buildings such as the cathedral. Spanish rule signalled a period of decadence which ended with the arrival of the Bourbons from Naples with whom Bari had a profitable relationship. The city is divided in an old town center, the most fascinating part of the city with its typical narrow winding streets and its mediaeval monuments, like the Swabian castle and the many churches including the Cathedral and the Basilica di San Nicola, and the new town.
Calabria is a region in the southern part of Italy. With only 9 percent of flat land, most of Calabria is comprised of hills and mountains. Unlike the rest of Italy frequented by tourists, Calabria does not possess a multitude of historic and constructed tourist attractions. Though there are also ancient bridges, churches, and castles, Calabria's pride is the pure and real beauty of the place and its dwellers. While all the bigger cities and provinces in Italy have updated to the modern civilization, Calabria, with remnants of the magnificent ancient civilization, still offer the old and warm captivating appeal to the gallant sightseer. The unpolluted air and clean waters are a sight to behold for anyone who visits Calabria. Aside form the coastline and mountains that primarily draw tourists to Calabria, the warm and cordial character evident to Calabrians add to the real beauty of the place.
Rome, a breathtaking city with a certain air of timelessness about itself, is the capital and the most populated commune in Italy. Mythology tells us that Rome gets its name from its founders, Romulus and Remus, though archaeological evidence suggests that the city grew from pastoral settlements on the palatine hill. The Leonardo da Vinci Airport or the Fiumicino Airport is well connected to different parts of the globe by most of the major air carriers. The tourist season in Rome begins in Easter and continues on to October. Spring and autumn are the peak periods when tourists pour in from various parts of the world. The numerous outdoor festivities and the light traffic on the roads in summer (made possible by the residents abandoning the city to enjoy the mountains and beaches) also makes this an ideal time to visit this beautiful city. Though visitors during this season must be warned that some restaurants and shops actually close in the month of August. For those who want to escape the cold in their countries, some also choose to spend Christmas here because of its mild winter.
There are many that would not have any kind words for Naples, thanks to the infamous reputation it enjoys as being a dangerous city that boasts of its overly-fanatical folk and high crime rate. But a trip to this curious city is a welcome change from the wealthier cities you will find in the north. You should really make it a point to give yourself time to seek out the city for all it has to offer. You will find more interesting things and happenings on the streets than in the many museums and tourist attractions. And although you may run the risk of getting mugged or encountering the seamier side of life, using proper caution should see you safely through your visit without much mishap or nasty occurrence. The origins of Naples can be traced to this marvelous atmosphere it has of its people's utter disregard for law and order. There is a complete absence of rules and regulations, sidewalks, traffic signs and signals, but in spite of all that, there is still a coming together of people and machines in some semblance of "order" that really defies all logic. But Naples is really much more than just this unsavoury reputation. The old center, which maybe needs a bit of a facelift, has wonderful architecture traced to its ancient past. Naples also has a wonderful bay and amazing sights on the romantic islands of Capri and Ischia. You can go further south to the Amalfi Coast with its rugged terrain and breathtaking views or take a small excursion to Pompeii and Herculaneum, a pair of cities that were once buried beneath a volcanic eruption around 79 AD.
In Turin, the capital of the Piedmont region northwest of Italy, sports cars and chocolate are a matter of pride. The city is also home to the Museo Egizio, one of the most impressive collections of Egyptian artifacts in the world. A stroll around Piazza Castello and along the Via Roma encompasses many of the must-see sights. Valentino Park houses an 18th-century castle, botanic garden and medieval village. When you've worked up an appetite, sample casual trattorias for pastas, regional wines and coffees. The Shroud of Turin (or Turin Shroud) is a linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have been physically traumatized in a manner consistent with the crucifixion. It is kept in the royal chapel of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin. The shroud is the subject of intense debate among people of faith, scientists, theologians and historians regarding where, when, and how the shroud and its images were created. The faithful believe it is the cloth that covered Jesus of Nazareth when he was placed in his tomb and that his image was imprinted on its fibers at, or near, the time of his proclaimed resurrection.
Sicily is an island full of strong contrasts, a land rich in history and culture, lively, enticing, cities of art, ancient fishermen's villages where time seems to have come to a standstill, amazing natural wonders, beautiful beaches and islands where you can relax surrounded by crystal clear waters. It is a crossroad for populations who were completely different from one another and who have left permanent traces of themselves in the island's culture.
