Destinations

Vienna is the capital of Austria, and by far the largest city in Austria as well as its cultural, economic and political center. Vienna lies in the very east of Austria and is close to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The city developed from early Celtic and Roman settlements into a Medieval and Baroque city, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It played an essential role as a leading European music center, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic center of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, as well as the late 19th century Ringstrasse lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks. In 2001, the city center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city ranks third in the world in terms of quality of life.

Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. It lies in the northwest of the country, very close to the German border. It is located at the northern boundary of the Alps, on the banks of the Salzach river. The old city centre is dominated by baroque towers and churches and the massive Fortress Hohensalzburg. The "Altstadt" how the historic centre is called, is one of the best-preserved city centres in the German-speaking world, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The name Salzburg literally means "Salt Castle", and derives its name from the barges carrying salt on the Salzach river, which were subject to a toll in the 8th century, as was customary for many communities and cities on European rivers.

Tyrol or Tirol is a state or Bundesland, located in the west of Austria. The state is split into two parts (North Tyrol and East Tyrol) by a 20 km-wide strip of land where the state of Salzburg borders directly on Italy. The capital of Tyrol is Innsbruck. Historically, Tyrol was a County of the Holy Roman Empire, later the Austrian Empire and finally a Kronland of Austria-Hungary. Tyrol is popular for its famous skiing resorts, but also during summer time it offers numerous possibilities for activities. Tyrol consists of no less than 38 scenic holiday regions that boast a great variety of characteristics and highlights: mighty peaks, crystal clear lakes and picturesque towns.
