Sample programme 1 - Safari in the Kruger National Park

Day 1: Welcome in South Africa

Upon arrival at Johannesburg airport, guests are welcomed by representatives and escorted to the check in for a charter or scheduled flight to the greater Kruger area
Daily scheduled flights are available from SAA to Hoedspruit and Nelspruit - the gateways to an unforgettable Safari
Alternative Option: private charter to the Game Lodge direct, most offer airstrips on the property. (flights are about 1 hour long)

Guests have some time to relax before departing on the first game drive on an open safari vehicle.
The team of knowledgeable guides and intuitive trackers will do their utmost to ensure you see a broad spectrum of this balanced ecosystem. Highlights might include prides of lions, parades of elephants, crashes of white rhinos, herds of buffaloes, dazzles of zebras, clans of hyenas, harems of impalas, journeys of giraffes, businesses of mongooses, cheetah, a glimpse of wild dogs, baboons trooping past the vehicles – to mention just a few!

Welcome Boma Dinner

The Boma reflects memories of the ancient world of African folk and their way of life. Boma, meaning Kraal in Swahili, formed an enclosure, usually made from latte sticks, for camps and fortified villages during the 18th and 19th century when tribal wars and colonial conquests were common. Savour a four-course dinner, prepared on the open fires and enjoyed beneath starlit skies. This African sky theme is a sensory experience, a delight for all the senses – an enchanting dinner that is perfectly accentuated by the sounds and performance of tribal dancers. The Dance has its origin in teaching social patterns and praise or criticises members of the community while celebrating festivals and funerals, competing, reciting history, proverbs and poetry; and to encounter gods.

Day 2: On search of the big 5

Today starts off with an early wake-up call, some tea, coffee and biscuits before heading out with the Rangers in search of the Big 5 and more.
After about 2.5 hours guests head back to their respective lodges for a sumptuous breakfast.
After breakfast guests have time at leisure to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the African bush from their suite or the pool.
Guests that have an interest in photography can share their experience with the Rangers who have over time had the opportunity to take some amazing wildlife photos which they have compiled into portfolios and love to share these with their guests and tell the stories of encounters in the bush.
Lunch will be served at the lodge before guests have some time for an afternoon nap, a spa treatment or just more relaxation.
In the late afternoon it is time for another game drive into the sunset, to witness a variety of game-viewing, often with fascinating predator interaction, be it with the golden light of day or while on a starlight spot-lit safari.
At a lookout some canapé and drinks will be served – what more could anyone ask for than overlooking the wide planes of Africa with the sun setting as a backdrop and a cold drink in your hand.
Upon return from the game drive guests have time to freshen up, and then dinner will be served at the Ebony Lodge.
Overnight in the respective lodges

Day 3: Panorama Route

Guests may choose if they would like to join the game drive in the early morning or rather sleep a bit later and be woken by the sounds of the bush waking up.
After breakfast guests depart on a day of some spectacular sites known as the Panorama Route. A luxury coach with qualified guides on board will be taking guests on the site seeing trip.
The Panorama Route is best known for its cultural heritage and its dramatic landscapes.
On a full day excursion, we wind our way through pine and eucalyptus forests whilst discovering some of Mpumalanga’s most spectacular scenery and breath-taking views. Your trip will take you to the Blyde River Canyon, the 3rd largest canyon in the world, to view stunning rock formations. Afterwards, you will visit spectacular sites such as God’s Window, Wonderview, Three Rondawels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes, which are deep cylindrical cavities formed by swirling waters as a result of water erosion over thousands of years. You will visit the sleepy old mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest, which has been lovingly preserved since the gold rush and is now a National Monument. Your day will not be complete without a visit to some of the most beautiful and refreshing waterfalls of the region.
Option: Gold Panning in Pilgrims Rest
Lunch will be served at one of the many restaurants in a quaint town en route. The restaurants here are all well known for wholesome home cooked cuisine.
In the late afternoon, guests are being transferred back to the lodge and have time at leisure before dinner will be served.

Day 4: Endangered Species

After the early morning safari and a sumptuous breakfast, guests have the opportunity to gain some in-depth knowledge of the environment or Raptor Rehabilitation Centre in Dullstroom (dependant of lodge location this will be substituted with a visit to the endangered species centre in Hoedspruit)
The main purpose of the centre is to educate the public as to the plight of raptors. They visit commercial lodges in the area, schools and other educational facilities. They create awareness and hope to stop the persecution of these birds which is a worldwide problem. They have a very good success rate with captive breeding involving many of the bird of prey species found here in South Africa.
Over the years captive breeding programmes worldwide have proved valuable in release schemes.
In the USA for instance, the pesticide DDT virtually wiped out the Peregrine Falcon population.
Once the chemical was banned the Peregrine Fund in the USA reintroduced them back into the wild through breeding schemes. Over the years they have been quite successful in our rehabilitation programme and to get a bird back into the wild is their ultimate goal. This is not always as easy as it sounds and takes a great deal of time and patience.
To achieve this they use two methods:
Falconry, where they actively hunt with the bird and get it to hunt for them. Once the bird shows that it is fit for successfully hunting with them then it is usually ready to fend for itself in the wild and is released.
Hacking Back is a method which involves leaving a healthy but unfit bird in an aviary for a few weeks to get used to its surroundings. The aviary is then left open to let the bird out in its own time to go and hunt.
The bird being unfit, usually does not catch anything on the first few attempts and returns to the aviary to get its daily food ration. The process is repeated until one day the bird is able to hunt and fend for itself and no longer returns.
Guests enjoy a lunch at their lodge and some time at leisure before a game drive and a dinner at the lodge.

Example of a Community Outreach program

After the safari and breakfast guests depart the lodge at about 10.30, in game viewing vehicles, and gather at the Happy Homes pre-school in the Justicia village, on the outskirts of the Sabi Sand Reserve.
At the Happy Homes Pre-school guests and the lodge chef to prepare a barbeque for the 80 children, during the meal, hand over to the school, and to the principals of another 9 local pre-schools, a theme pack on “Wild Animals” which the teachers will use in their classes. The children will show their appreciation with a little song and dance.
Some guests could watch the lessons in action and possibly provide teachers with some assistance, whilst the balance will help prepare a barbeque meal (hot dogs made with “boerewors”, a type of sausage that is really enjoyed in South Africa, and some potatoes and beans.
Thereafter, in two groups visit two local primary schools, Babati and Sam Nzima, and hand over soccer kits to their respective first teams. Guests have the opportunity to play a soccer game, at the two schools, with the schools’ first teams, after school is finished for the day. Cool drinks and biscuits are shared thereafter with the players, who will proudly be wearing their new kit.
The children will provide the entertainment, singing the songs learned in school.
After a day with the children, guests return to the lodge.

Day 5: Safari and Bush Dinner

Guests may choose to go on the game drive or join their ranger on a walk through the bush.
On the bush walk, you'll get to experience wildlife at first hand. You'll learn about the ecology, the birds, the game, the plants and insects, and also how to interpret the signs of the wild, including animal tracks. When you come face-to-face with that elephant or watch that dung beetle labouring with his ball of dung, you'll realise just how impressive and interconnected African wildlife really is.
A walking safari is your opportunity to experience the wild in a way that most humans have not for hundreds of years. You'll be accompanied by a personally armed ranger, with a backup guide or tracker, who'll make sure that you're kept safe at all times. These professionals will guide you along trails and tracks to watering holes and rivers, showing you the secrets of the bush up close and personal.
Lunch will be served at the lodge before some more time to relax and watch the life of Africa pass by outside your suite or the deck of the lodge.
In the late afternoon, all guests depart on a game drive which will end at the dinner location.
A bush dinner is the ultimate dining experience, combining five-star cuisine with the exquisite setting of the African Bush. Dinner will be served around a large open fire surrounded by lanterns in the trees & the stars in the sky. This is an unforgettable experience and the perfect ending to an eventful week in Africa.

Day 6: Farewell

CSR

Cape Town is home to many corporate social responsibility projects. These initiatives are always seeking to fund and are humbled and grateful for all contributions that organisations can make to them. Many of these initiatives can also be incorporated into a group tour excursion whereby delegates have the opportunity to witness and experience 1st hand the great work that these projects offer to the community.

One of these organisations is The Home of Hope. The Home of Hope is a registered Child Protection Organisation which provides services for the safety, well-being and care of all children in need of it, with a holistic approach to protection, education and support with the aim of breaking the cycle of child abuse.

We always endeavour to include a grassroots component into programme itineraries. There are many wonderful grassroots projects within Cape Town, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. These projects are headed up by various humanitarians and ecological activists, and any form of contribution be it financial or in the form of participation is always welcomed and appreciated.
